Uncivil Liberties

Podcast-Inspired Book Project

I created this book to accompany the October 9, 2017 episode of the New York Times podcast, The Daily. The episode, hosted by Michael Barbaro, discusses the ACLU's history of valuing free speech rights over protections for minorities and marginalized communities. Barbaro interviews current ACLU lawyer Abré Conner, former ACLU lawyer David Goldberger, and NYT reporter Joseph Goldstein in the hopes of answering some difficult questions: Is hate speech still free speech? Should Neo-Nazis and other violent hate groups be afforded the same rights as all Americans? Will the American Civil Liberties Union change its rigid stance on the First Amendment?
